App Service should route all traffic through VNet

Medium Azure General webapp-app-service-route-traffic

Applies to

  • Microsoft.Web/sites

What CGPulse checks

A resource passes this rule when siteConfig.vnetRouteAllEnabled must equal true. Anything else is reported as a finding with the evaluated property value attached as evidence.

How to fix it

Enable VNet Route All to route outbound traffic through network security controls. In Azure Portal: App Service > Networking > VNet integration > enable Route All. See: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/app-service/overview-vnet-integration

Careful: Routes ALL outbound traffic through VNet. Requires VNet integration to be configured first. May break outbound connectivity if routes/NSGs are misconfigured

CLI

az webapp update --ids "{id}" --set vnetRouteAllEnabled=true

Terraform

resource "azurerm_linux_web_app" "{name}" {
  name                = "{name}"
  resource_group_name = "{rg}"
  location            = var.location
  service_plan_id     = azurerm_service_plan.{name}.id
  site_config {
    vnet_route_all_enabled = true
  }
}
