Synapse workspace should disable public network access

High Azure General synapse-no-public-access

Applies to

  • Microsoft.Synapse/workspaces

What CGPulse checks

A resource passes this rule when publicNetworkAccess must equal Disabled. Anything else is reported as a finding with the evaluated property value attached as evidence.

How to fix it

Disable public network access to prevent unauthorized internet exposure. In Azure Portal: Workspace > Networking > set Public network access to Disabled. See: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/machine-learning/how-to-configure-private-link

Careful: Disabling public access blocks Synapse Studio and all API access not using private endpoints

CLI

az synapse workspace update --ids "{id}" --public-network-access Disabled

Terraform

resource "azurerm_synapse_workspace" "{name}" {
  name                                 = "{name}"
  resource_group_name                  = "{rg}"
  location                             = var.location
  storage_data_lake_gen2_filesystem_id = "<adls-filesystem-id>"
  sql_administrator_login              = "<admin-login>"
  sql_administrator_login_password     = "<admin-password>"
  public_network_access_enabled        = false
  identity {
    type = "SystemAssigned"
  }
