Storage account should use Managed Identity

Medium Azure General storage-managed-identity

Applies to

  • Microsoft.Storage/storageAccounts

What CGPulse checks

A resource passes this rule when identity.type must be one of ["SystemAssigned","SystemAssigned,UserAssigned","UserAssigned"]. Anything else is reported as a finding with the evaluated property value attached as evidence.

How to fix it

Enable managed identity for credential-free access to other Azure services. In Azure Portal: Storage account > Identity > enable System-assigned managed identity. See: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/common/storage-auth-aad

CLI

az resource update --ids "{id}" --set identity.type=SystemAssigned

Terraform

resource "azurerm_storage_account" "{name}" {
  name                     = "{name}"
  resource_group_name      = "{rg}"
  location                 = var.location
  account_tier             = "Standard"
  account_replication_type = "LRS"
  identity {
    type = "SystemAssigned"
  }
}
